Men will literally become the New York Ninja instead of going to therapy

For those who don’t know, New York Ninja was filmed in 1984 but never finished… until now after a two year labor of love by the Vinegar Syndrome folks who edited the raw footage, added in voice actors, and soundwaved it with a total banger of a score to create a ‘lost’ movie from 1984 with the utmost care.
I’m kind of blown away by how entertaining this was and at how flawless a job they did at keeping the 1984 spirit and integrity of this film intact… everything about this feels pure and natural like it just fell off the DTV shelf. I loved the cast, the dubbing, that amazing score, the insane plutonium man villain with his weirdo…

Ninjas originated in Japan during the 15th century, but most experts agree that the artform reached its peak five centuries later in New York with the addition of roller skates.

Superkicker John Liu wanders around New York, stopping the same five punks who can't keep themselves from kidnapping ladies. Filmed in a truly demented style where fight scenes often take place in long uncomfortable takes, the hero winks at the camera, and everyone has T-shirts that say I (HEART) THE NEW YORK NINJA. Filled with amazing New York grime guerilla photography.
To think, this movie would have been lost forever if not for the heroic work of Vinegar Syndrome Employee/Filmmaker Kurtis Spieler. He smartly never plays things as a joke, which makes it all that much funnier.

“My problem is you want them alive. I want them dead.”
this city needs a hero.
this city owes him justice.the history behind the resurrection of this “man turned vigilante turned roller-skating ninja” movie breathes so much more life into it, more than it probably would have ever expected back in its early production days—eventually shelved and unfinished. it may have been found incomplete but Vinegar Syndromemade sure New York Ninja would never be forgotten. a true nonsensical riot with so much synth, cheap homemade costumes, high-kicks, and a tremendous amount of heart. so much fun to be had in the dirty streets of New York with our hero.
I ❤️ New York Ninja
side note: not Elijah Wood.

Review by Lou (rhymes with wow!) ★★★★ 17
A very entertaining lost movie lovingly salvaged/ restored/ completed by the guys and gals at Vinegar Syndrome*. This has some of the silliest ninja action that I have seen in a while (roller skates fighting for instance), it cracked me up. I loved the one-dimensional bad guys with their bonkers outfits; very reject Warriors. The dubbing was absolutely brilliant, it set the mood really well. Fantastic synth-heavy score too (courtesy of Voyage3r).
I had a blast watching this with Michelle.
*Such a beautiful release. Well done!

While the story behind the making (or, restoring? Remaking? Excavation?) of NYN is way more compelling than the plot of the actual movie, this stands as the new gold standard for “elevated schlock” thanks to Vinegar Syndrome lovingly saving, re-dubbing, re-editing and re-scoring a lost film.
It’s “bad” sure, but as a slice of 80’s low budget NYC Sleaze-Fu, damn if it isn’t a shit ton of fun and I’m sure even more of a blast in a theater with a crowd. -

Even better a second time.

Vinegar Syndrome has taken their restoration work to a whole new level by resurrecting a long lost 80s film and saving it from a fate of cinematic purgatory. Abandoned long before completion, a new script, score and overall vision was painstakingly created. The result?A remarkable rebirth of a time capsule of gritty New York exploitation insanity!
When a man's wife is killed by some violent thugs he goes undercover as a vigilante ninja! But not just any ninja...The New York Ninja! He's got his work cut out for him as there's rising disappearances of woman, deadly street gangs and a crazed radioactive madman known as the "Plutonium Killer!" Holy smokes!
Like a zany combination of Miami Connection and Death Wish,…

This American-shot passion project for Taiwanese martial arts star and "superkicker" John Liu was filmed in 1984 but left unfinished. The un-edited negative was acquired by Vinegar Syndrome and was finally completed this year by Kurtis Spieler (credited as "re-director"). In the Blu-Ray intro, Spieler explains that the audio had been lost and no script survived, so he not only had to figure out how this footage fit together, but he also had to create a whole new soundtrack without any reliable reference for the dialogue. Knowing that the new voice cast included such kitsch icons as Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Cynthia Rothrock, and Ginger Lynn Allen, I assumed that Spieler's reconstruction would be some kind of jokey…

A man ninjas groups of thugs. Heard this one before? Well, the story of this film is much better than plot of this film. Because this was made in '84, and finally brought to the screen, with legendary B-movie actors dubbing voices, in 2021.
So why was this saved? Amazing athletes doing fight choreography a couple beats too slow. A radioactive villain with questionable powers. And a real glimpse into what that bottom row of the action section at the video rental store was compromised of.
I also produce a horror movie podcast called Watch No Evil. They have watched the bottom row of the horror section I assure you.
